John Robert Gray, 86, passed away Monday, June 13, 2016 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

A graveside service with military honors will be held Friday, June 17, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park, 2925 US 117 South in Dudley.  The family will receive friends following the graveside.

John Robert Gray was born in Greenville, South Carolina, on December 28, 1929, to Francis Milton Gray and Elizabeth Moose Gray. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Helen H. Gray.

He is survived by his children Susan, David, and John (with grandchildren Harrison, Glen, and Robert).

In 1991, John married Colleen Medlicott whose children are Jane Allen (with grandchildren Robin and Greg), Ja Medlicott (Turner and Cooper) and Jamie Medlicott (Kacie).

John served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy onboard the USS Kenneth Whiting.  He was a proud member of American Legion Post 380. John retired from a long career with Southern Bell. He was active with the Boy Scout Program at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Charlotte. During his retirement, he loved making trips to the coast, fishing with family and friends, and gardening at home.

The family would like to thank the staff of Wayne Memorial Hospital and the Kitty Askins Hospice Center for their excellent and compassionate care.

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
