Ernestine Barnes Obituary

Ernestine Barnes: a sister, aunt, cousin, teacher, and mentor who loved God, her family, and friends received her ultimate healing Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at her home.

Ernestine and her twin brother, Eugene Barnes (deceased), were the youngest of seven children of George and Cora Barnes.

She graduated from Friendship High School in Fremont, North Carolina in June of 1952.  The following fall she entered Fayetteville State University.  In the middle of the second semester, she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and returned home.  Her sister, Edna (who was living in Durham at the time), found a reputable Rheumatologist.  He was able to treat her condition.  With determination and a desire to complete her degree, she returned to her studies the following year.  In 1958, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.  She furthered her studies at Shaw University and Western Carolina University.  She was blessed with 23 years as a classroom teacher in Kinston and Wilson, North Carolina, retiring in 1980 at the age of 47.

Ernestine Barnes was preceded in death by her parents (Hersel and Cora Barnes), one sister (Edna B. Hester), and five brothers (George Barnes, Phillip Barnes, Paul Barnes, Jack Barnes, and Eugene Barnes).

Ms. Barnes is survived by nieces Marsha Smith (Virginia), Sonnette Barnes (North Carolina), Pekitta Tynes (Virginia), and Diane O’Neal (Virginia), as well as nephews Kenneth Hester (North Carolina), Anthony Barnes (Virginia), Dewayne Barnes (Maryland), and Derrick Barnes (Massachusetts).  Ernestine is, also, survived by Goddaughters Linda Richardson (North Carolina), Betty Strickland (North Carolina), and LaVern Cox (North Carolina).

Finally, she leaves behind a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.
