Walter was born in Johnston County on May 26th 1938 to the late Gela and Edgar Gurley. Walter spent his youth enjoying time on the family farm and going with his father to the stock yard. He also found much pleasure in pranking his brothers, particularly his brother, Woodard. Walter was always quick to share those memories with anyone willing to listen and enjoy a good laugh with him. For those who knew him knew that Walter’s laugh was infectious.
In his later years, you could be sure to find Walter outside working as he had his scheduled days where he did his “chores.” Some of his favorite past times consisted of sitting on his front porch waving at every single person who drove by, attending softball games, building bird houses and going with his friends to gospel music concerts. If you came to visit Walter you were also going to be in for a lot of gospel music as he kept a radio on inside as well as outside of the house at all times. Music was definitely something special to him.
Walter was a devoted member of Pike's Crossroads Pentecostal Holiness Church of Pikeville where he served as a greeter and usher for many years. During his time at Pike’s Crossroads, Walter was awarded pins for twenty years of perfect attendance in Sunday school. Outside of church, Walter was an honorary member of both Little River and Nahunta volunteer fire departments where he loved serving his community by selling BBQ chicken tickets. Nobody could sell tickets like Walter. He kept a notebook on hand at all times with all of his ticket customers.
Walter is survived by a brother, Woodard Gurley and his wife, Ruby of LaGrange; a sister, Melva Jean Thompson of Pikeville and a sister in-law, Dorothy Gurley of Goldsboro and many special nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Walter is preceded in death by two brothers, Edmond Gurley and Harold Gurley.
Services entrusted to the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
