Shelton Edgerton Obituary

Shelton Barnes Edgerton of Pikeville passed away Saturday, May 22, 2021 at home.


A memorial service to honor his life will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at 7:00 pm at Nahunta Friends Church in the sanctuary with former Pastor, Steve Lawrence officiating. Visitation will follow immediately after the service in Friends Hall. Those attending not vaccinated are asked to wear a mask and social distance.


Shelton Edgerton was a farmer for many years starting in his early teens in the Nahunta Community, later he was the owner and manager of the Nahunta Store and Tire.  Shelton was a volunteer fireman with the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department first as a junior fireman at the age of 14. He began active service in 1979. During his years of Fire Service, he held officer positions including Assistant Fire Chief and served on the department’s board. He retired from active service in 2019 after 40 years of active service. He loved farming with his father, but his true passion was fire service to his community. Shelton was recognized as the Wayne County Fireman of the Year in 2001. He believed strongly that volunteer fire service was vital to our communities and he encouraged young people to become involved by giving back while learning commitment, duty, and service to others through voluntary fire service.


Shelton was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas Edgerton, Sr. and Hazel Barnes Edgerton of Nahunta. His brother, Douglas (Skippy) Edgerton, Jr. of Nahunta and sister, Betty Jean Edgerton of Chatham.


Shelton is survived by his sister, Janet Sumner, and her husband, Perry of Goldsboro, nephew, Danny Edgerton and wife, Melissa of Nahunta, his niece, Christy Duval and husband, Danny of Mississippi and his sister-in-law, Karen Collins of Nahunta. In addition, he is survived by his great-nephews, Justin Edgerton and wife, Danielle, Tyson Edgerton, Anderson Edgerton, Courtney Duval, and Hunter Duval as well as an uncle, aunts, and cousins.

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
