Rufus Sidney Wheeler Jr. peacefully departed this earthly life on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at his home, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.
Born in Virginia on September 10, 1950, he was the son of the late Rufus Sidney Wheeler Sr. and Erma Smith Wheeler. Rufus was a hardworking man who spent many years as a truck driver, faithfully providing for his family through his dedication and strong work ethic. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and later became a devoted member of Judah Place of Deliverance in Goldsboro, where his faith remained an important part of his life.
Rufus will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He treasured the time spent with his family and leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, and devotion that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his beloved wife, Dorothy C. Wheeler; his son, Antonio M. Wheeler of Goldsboro; his three daughters, Donneania G. Blake and husband, Larry of Maryland, Stephanie Flowers and husband, Kevin of Goldsboro and Crystal M. Wheeler (Shawn) of Virginia; his brothers, Hiawatha Wheeler of Virginia and Kenneth Wheeler and wife, Jeannie of Virginia; his sister, Antoinette Greene and husband, Johnnie of Virginia; eight grandchildren; Antonio Wheeler Jr , Quanteria Chesnutt (Brandon) , Kendrick Wheeler(Shicara) , Jh'Quan Dunn, Daevion Smith, Keiara Green, Aniyah Green, Kevin Green two great-grandchildren; Khaliyah Wheeler & Brandon Chesnutt II along with a host of other extended grandchildren, relatives, and dear friends.
A visitation will be held Thursday, June 4, 2026 from 4 until 6 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
The funeral service will be held Friday, June 5, 2026 at 12 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment will follow at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
