Roy Cantey Jr.

Roy Cantey, Jr. passed away on July 6, 2019 at the age of 87.  He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law, brother and uncle to his family. 

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doreen; his son, Paul and wife, Linda; son, Martin and wife, Joanne; daughters, Lisa and Marianne and sisters, Mary Nell and Pam.  He had six grandchildren, Sean, Tim, Kelly, Russell, Sam, Adam and one great-grandchild, Kaison. In addition, he had many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Friday, July 19, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 164 Longs Plant Farm Road in Goldsboro.  The family will receive friends following the service at the Holiday Inn Express banquet room located at 1003 Sunburst Drive in Goldsboro.

Roy was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Mae; his father, McRoy; brothers, Fred and Sandy and sister, Martha Jean.

He was born in Lake City,  South Carolina on August 11, 1931. Roy was a proud US Air Force and Vietnam Veteran who served his country for 24 years in the field of weapons mechanics. In addition to spending a year in Vietnam, he served in England, where he met his wife; also serving, Okinawa, Korea, Thailand, Turkey, Libya and Iran. In the US, he served in Delaware, New York, New Mexico and North Carolina.

After retiring from the Air Force, Roy moved to Goldsboro, North Carolina where he has lived for the past 46 years. He was an active volunteer at the SJAFB Chapel and Wayne Opportunity Center.

He lived with a spirit of humble gratitude and will be greatly missed.

Roy’s family thanks his caregivers, Edna Hinson, Christal Howell, Karen Carter and 3HC Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Wayne Opportunity Center and Cures for the Colors.

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
