Nickie Darrell Lancaster, a cherished Father, Grandfather, Brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on July 15, 2023. Nickie was born in Wayne County to the late Ralph Haywood Lancaster and Doris Marie Herring Lancaster.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Sherry Shelby and husband, Tom of Goldsboro, NC; son, Nickolas Lancaster of Pikeville, NC; his sister, Janice Marie Casey and husband, Cecil of Pikeville; three grandchildren, Dillon Lancaster, Darren Lancaster and Tori Shelby.
Nickie was a simple man; yet, lived life with vigor and dedication. As a toddler he was diagnosed with polio and underwent multiple surgeries. The March of Dimes recognized him as their Poster Child. At the age of 10, his Mother passed away which led him along with his siblings to be placed in the Orphanage in Oxford. While there, he learned a couple of trades such as learning how to cut hair and was able to work in the Barber shop. He also learned his lifelong skill of carpentry. Like Jesus, he was a master carpenter. His career consisted of residential and commercial construction. Through the years, his go-get-it-done attitude and strong work ethic led him to complete jobs in numerous states.
A loyal fan, Nickie enjoyed watching Duke Basketball, NASCAR, and watching western TV shows especially Gunsmoke. In his earlier years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting with his friends from Dan's Country Store. Yet, nothing brought him more joy than the precious moments he spent with his grandchildren. Their laughter, stories, and shared experiences were his greatest treasures.
He was a warm and kind-hearted man always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a man of very little words; still, he was the very heart of his family with their lives revolving around him just as his revolved around theirs. His memory will be carried in the hearts of many.
In addition to his parents, Nickie was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Jane Lancaster, his brothers, Eddie Lancaster and Randy Lancaster and one grandson, Austin Lancaster.
The family will receive friends Monday, July 17, 2023 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Pate-Lancaster Cemetery on Airport Road, after Forehand Road intersection in Pikeville with Reverend Christian Powell officiating.
Services entrusted to the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
