Mekio Smith Watkins, was born on December 3, 1959 in Goldsboro, NC to the late Herbert Hoover Aldridge and Rosa Maria Aldridge. She departed this life on September 25, 2024 in her home surrounded by her family. 

She is remembered as a devoted wife, mother and friend who profoundly impacted the lives of everyone around her.

 

Mekio graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1978 and began her career with Wayne County Public Schools in the early 1980s. In 1996, she pursued her entrepreneurial dream by opening Precious Jems Home Daycare, where she nurtured countless children with her love and passion for education. After ten fulfilling years, she returned to the school system, from Goldsboro High School to North Drive Elementary. She finished her career as the Secretary at Southern Wayne High School, where she continued to make lasting memories and connections.
 

Mekio was survived by her husband, William P. Watkins. They were married on April 17, 1993. They shared 31 years of love, laughter and beautiful memories. She also leaves to cherish her 3 daughters: Shaleta (Craig) Boyd, Knightdale, NC, Shareta Smith of Goldsboro, NC, and Brandy Smith of Raleigh, NC. 3 siblings: Anthony (JoAnn) Aldridge of Lawton, OK, Quinton (Michelle)Aldridge of Goldsboro, NC, and Meria (Bill) Jackson of Goldsboro, NC. 3 Sisters-In-Loves; Linda Spruill, Brenda Watkins, and Janie Edwards all of Goldsboro, NC. Surviving Aunts-Uncles; Gene (Mary) Herring, Dorthy Billings, Verta Herring, Mae (Booker) Lane, Lena Brewington, Ada Ruth Herring, Inez Aldridge and Barbara Herring; 3 God-Children, Michael Warren, Aaquan Butler, and John Eli Greenfield and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. 

Mekio cherished her time with her family, her Southern Wayne family, and her church community, where she found great joy in worship and fellowship. She received her Ministerial Certificate on January 28, 2017 and was ordained as an Elder on August 27, 2023.

 

In 2019, Mekio faced a rare cancer diagnosis, yet she remained an inspiring source of strength and encouragement for others, balancing her treatment with her responsibilities and her unwavering faith in the Lord. Her life motto, "Trust The Process," resonated deeply with those who knew her, reflecting her resilience and optimistic spirit.

 

Mekio Smith Watkins leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and faith, and she will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Homegoing service will be held Sunday, September 29, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Word of Truth Christian Fellowship in Goldsboro. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley. Viewing will be held Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
