Joseph Plummer Obituary

Mr. Joseph Louis Plummer was born on July 21, 1935.  He was the son of the late James Arthur Plummer and Robena Talley Plummer in Vance County, North Carolina. On Wednesday, April 22, 2020, he departed this life at UNC Wayne Memorial Hospital, in Goldsboro, North Carolina at the age of 84.

Joe received his early education in the Vance County Public Schools system. At an early age he made the most important decision of his life. He professed Christ as his Lord and Savior and joined St. Pauls United Christian Church in Middleburg, North Carolina.  Shortly after high school, he entered the United States Navy where he received an honorable discharge. During this time he moved to Newark, NJ.  Shortly after, he fell in love with Emily Elizabeth Lee.

Joe became employed with the United Parcel Service for 30 years. Joe had a burning desire to serve Christ. Joe became a member of New Salem Baptist Church where he served the Lord with all of his heart. He served the body of Christ in many capacities. He was proud to be a Deacon and also a Sunday School Superintendent. After retiring from United Parcel Service (UPS), he relocated to Goldsboro, North Carolina.  Joe continued his service to his community. He served Meals on Wheels as a volunteer and also served as a volunteer in the Wayne County Public School System.  He also volunteered at Wayne Memorial Hospital for several years.

During his spare time, he enjoyed sports.  He enjoyed the NY Mets and the Carolina Panthers. Joe was an expert bowler. After every three games he would always report his average score. We will always remember Dad’s expressions and his sermons for every situation. He loved his family and wanted all of his family to know the Lord. All of his children would say “He was the best Dad in the world”.

Joe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Emily E. Plummer; daughter, Jacqueline (Raymond) Rogers, Pikeville; Doris (Calvin) Newton, Rosewood; Shannan (Joseph) Rivenbark, Goldsboro; two sons, John Lee of Irvington, NJ; Melvin (Tomiko) Plummer, Pikeville and a niece, Roxanne Butler of Goldsboro. In addition, a sister, Patricia Plummer  and brother, Charles Plummer, both of Durham, NC; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grand and a host of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service for family and close friends will be held at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley.
