Johnny Stephen Mason, 60, passed away peacefully after a short illness at Duke University Hospital in Durham. Born in Wayne County on July 24, 1965, Johnny was the beloved son of Dorothy Taylor Mason of Goldsboro and the late John William Mason.
Johnny dedicated much of his career to traveling for work, spending long periods away from home to provide for the family he loved so deeply. Though the road often called him away, his heart was always with those waiting for him at home. The moments he cherished most were the times he returned to be surrounded by his family, especially his precious granddaughter, Makinley, who brought endless joy and light into his life.
A devoted husband, father, son, brother, and grandfather, Johnny was known for his quiet strength, hardworking nature, and unwavering dedication to those he loved. Family meant everything to him, and the love he shared with them will remain a lasting legacy.
In addition to his mother, Johnny is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sherron Mason; his daughter, Kelly Mason of Goldsboro; his sister, Carolyn Mason Walker and husband, Jeff, of Goldsboro; his treasured granddaughter, Makinley Newell of Swansboro; his sister-in-law, Debra Mason of Landis and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, John William Mason, and his brother, Eddie Sherrill Mason.
At Johnny’s request, no formal services will be held.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Duke University Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Johnny during his illness.
Professional services are entrusted to Howell Funeral Home & Crematory.
