Jaither West Sr., 98, of Goldsboro departed this walk of life, Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at ECU Medical Heath Medical Center in Greenville.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro. A viewing will be held Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service with military honors will be held Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley.
Jaither West was born on December 29, 1924, in Craven County, NC, to the late Irving and Zelphia West. Jaither was one of 10 children who preceded him in death: Alonzo, Gertrude, Wilton, Nicie, Roosevelt, Sadie, Betty, and Vera.
Jaither was educated in Wayne County public school system in North Carolina. He joined the Army and served during World War II. After returning from the war, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jaither worked hard to establish a successful career in construction. He was employed by two major companies, County Construction, and Danella Construction. He was widely respected for his work ethic, attention to detail, and leadership abilities.
Jaither met and married the love of his life, Hattie Elizabeth Powell, on April 3, 1943. Through this union, seven beautiful children were born and raised. In addition to their own, Jaither and Hattie raised two grandsons.
Jaither was known for his love of the outdoors, family gatherings, and gardening. He took great pride in his family, maintaining his garden and landscaping. His beautiful roses were his pride and joy. Working in his yard was a source of joy for him. Watching his children, the fruits of his labor, grow and blossom was a constant reminder of God’s awesomeness.
Jaither was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Elizabeth West; (daughters) Hattie Mae White and Vallorie Renee West, (son) Jaither James West. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his sons, Tyrone West and Edward West (Patricia), of Goldsboro, NC, daughters Betty Williams( John), Goldsboro, NC, and Eloise Crawford (James) of Philadelphia, PA., grandsons Tyrone Jones and William West of Philadelphia, PA; twenty-two grandchildren; forty-four great-grands; thirty-four great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great grand; one sister Beulah Lisby of Philadelphia, PA and a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends. His legacy of hard work, perseverance, and dedication to his family and friends will always be remembered.
