Grover Clifford Owens Jr., 92, of Goldsboro, NC, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by family on Monday, April 1, 2024 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Grover was born in Cool Spring Township, near Forest City, NC on April 23, 1931 to Grover Clifford Owens Sr. and Sarah Burley Owens. Grover graduated from Wofford College with a pre-med degree in Chemistry before enlisting in the Army during the Korean War. A proud Veteran, Grover humbly served his country before a lifelong career at Burlington Industries, where he retired in 1980. After moving to Goldsboro in 1990, Grover put his love for carpentry to work in Tool World at Lowe’s of Goldsboro until 2009.
Grover was an active member of Pinewood Presbyterian, where he served as an Elder, until 2009. He joined his family as an active member of New Hope Church for the last 14 years. There, he devoted his weekends to serving the Upward Sports Ministry as the designated hotdog chef. In addition to his passion for serving the Lord, Grover was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend.
Grover is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Betty Bostic Owens, and their daughter, Cyndi Owens Acree.
He leaves behind his son, James Richard Owens and wife, Rebecca of Asheboro, NC; son-in-law, Mike Acree of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Lisa Owens Callicutt and husband, Phil of Asheboro, NC, Kevin Acree and wife, Brittany of LaGrange, NC, and Erin Fonseca and husband, Felipe of Goldsboro; and seven great grandchildren, Sara and Austin Callicutt, Harper and Hampton Acree and John Owen, William and Evelyn Fonseca. He also leaves behind his dearest brother, Dr. Harold Owens and wife, Evelyn; nieces, Melissa Owens Langston and Allison Owens Buckner and their families.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, April 5th at New Hope Church, 200 E. New Hope Rd, Goldsboro. Visitation will take place at 11 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall, followed by a service at 12 p.m. in the Sanctuary. A graveside will immediately follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to New Hope Church or Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
