Yolanda C. Vernon departed this life for her next on Sunday, October 22, 2017 after a short illness.
She was born in Sona, Republic of Panama to Ofelia M. Sosa de Velasquez and Jacinto Velasquez where she spent her early childhood. Her family later moved to Panama City where she was schooled. She lived for several years in New York and New Jersey.
As a young woman, Yolanda spent a period as a media spokesperson for Sony Corporation in the Republic of Panama where she subsequently met her future husband, James.
Yolanda a dedicated supporter of Catholic Charities, where, among many, she helped Sister Linda Koonce of The Spirit of the Lord International Mission for over 20 years and in the process developing a long-lasting friendship.
She always opened her heart to an orphaned animal as witnessed by the menagerie of animals she was surrounded with over the years.
Yolanda is survived by her husband of 53 years, Retired SMSgt James (Jim) Vernon of Goldsboro; a special sister-in-law, Paula Tomlinson; special friends, Eva Amador of Panama, Sherry Strickland and her husband, Henry; a special niece, Susan Triano Francis; special aunts, Rose Royal and Katie Mitchell. She also leaves behind four sisters and one brother in The Republic of Panama.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Theresa Triano and a brother, Orlando Velasquez as well as her parents.
Funeral mass will be held Monday, October 30, 2017 at 4 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will take place at a later date in Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary Catholic Church in Goldsboro in her memory, where she was a member.
The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
