Jean Summerlin Askew, 85, of the Rosewood Community went to her heavenly home Saturday, November 24, 2018 at the home of her daughter in Clayton.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Pine Forest United Methodist Church where she was a lifetime member. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Princeton. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 until 1 :45 in the church fellowship hall.
Mrs. Askew was born in Duplin County on September 5, 1933 to the late Joseph “Jack” Lillard Summerlin Sr. and Margaret Parker Summerlin. She graduated high school from St. Mary’s College in Raleigh and attended Greensboro Women’s College. She loved her family, church, friends and her community. She loved to travel and will be deeply missed by all.
She is survived by one son, Paul Askew and wife, Dr. Teena Guenther of Massachusetts; three daughters, Deborah Carswell-Spyrison and husband, Paul of Clayton, Susan Askew Whitley and husband, Chris of Clayton and Teresa Askew Powell of Greenville; one brother, Joseph “Joe” Summerlin Jr. of Summerlin’s Crossroads; three grandchildren, Noah Guenther Askew, John Hampton Carswell III and Laura Caroline Carswell and a special friend, Mary Willetts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Ray Askew; her second husband, Franklin Neal Summerlin; her beloved granddaughter, Wendy Michelle Bloom and her lifelong best friend, Arlene Davis.
Although flowers are welcome, memorial contributions may be directed to Kory Wawanaca Methodist Children’s Home, a Bolivian orphanage, 303 Windy Circle, Goldsboro, NC 27530 or dropped off at Pine Forest UMC Church in Rosewood.
The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
